UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU RUN

Modules, setup & testing.

Start with an isolated environment

Create a virtual environment for each project. These scripts use the standard library; no pip installation is needed. Activate the environment only if you install additional approved dependencies.

python --version
python -m venv .venv
# Windows PowerShell
.\.venv\Scripts\Activate.ps1
# macOS / Linux
source .venv/bin/activate

Modules and packages

A module is an importable Python file; packages group modules. Prefer the standard library when it meets your needs. For third-party packages, check the publisher and licence, pin a reviewed version, and use your approved package index.

python -m pip --version
python -m pip list
python -m pip check

Validate before running

Save a .py file. py_compile checks syntax and writes a local __pycache__ file; it does not run the script body. A syntax pass does not prove the target or permissions are correct. Then test against disposable fixtures.

python -m py_compile script.py
# After review, on authorised test data:
python script.py

Keep your work

Tailor values in the fields, then edit the script if needed. Parameter changes regenerate code. Save edited versions to the local runbook and export it before clearing browser data. Avoid storing secrets here.

Import example:
from pathlib import Path
print(Path.cwd())

Validate configuration without exposing it

Python 3.11 includes tomllib for reading TOML. Handle malformed input and report only the information needed for diagnosis; configuration values can contain secrets.
