UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU RUN

Modules, setup & testing.

Use Bash on the intended platform

These examples target GNU/Linux, Bash 4+ and the named utilities. systemctl and journalctl require a systemd host. macOS utilities differ; do not assume identical flags.

bash --version
# Parse only; does not run the script body:
bash -n script.sh
# After review on a suitable test host:
bash script.sh

Shell tools are your modules

Bash scripts compose installed commands. Check the command before use. Install missing tools through your organisation’s approved package process, not arbitrary downloaded installer pipes.

command -v find
command -v systemctl
command -v openssl
# ShellCheck, if already installed:
shellcheck script.sh

Quote paths and fail clearly

Quoted variables prevent accidental splitting and glob expansion. A double dash ends options for commands that support it. strict mode helps surface failures, but is not a complete safety check.

set -euo pipefail
folder="/path with spaces"
printf "%s\n" "$folder"

Review permissions and output

Begin as a normal user. Some logs and processes are hidden without additional access. Ask for the minimum authorised permissions rather than automatically adding sudo. Redact host and account details from shared reports.

bash -n script.sh
# No remote script execution occurs in this workbench.

Know which schedules are loaded

systemctl list-timers --all inspects loaded systemd timers. An absent item is not proof that no timer unit file exists; check unit files separately when diagnosing missing schedules.
