BEFORE YOU RUN A FIX
A better troubleshooting handover.
- Define the scope. Record the symptom, exact error, start time and whether one user, one device or several people are affected.
- Check before changing. Start with read-only checks. Confirm the device, tenant and account before using an administrative session.
- Understand the preview. In PowerShell,
-WhatIfonly helps when the command implements it correctly. It is not a sandbox for arbitrary scripts. - Isolate dependencies. Use a Python virtual environment for project packages. This separates dependencies but does not isolate malicious code from your files or network.
- Protect the evidence. Remove passwords, tokens and personal information from logs before sharing them. Record what changed and how to reverse it.
- Verify the outcome. Repeat the original user action, record the result and escalate with the checks already completed if the fault remains.
PowerShell execution policy helps prevent unintended script execution; it is not a security boundary. Do not disable organisational controls as a general troubleshooting shortcut.
